“If a pupil cannot learn in the way we teach, we must teach in a way that a pupil can learn”
Inclusion is a core value of Ysgol Greenhill and every pupil has the right to a safe and enriched education. We know that not everyone learns in the same way and we are in a privileged position to be able to offer a wide range of support and guidance to our pupils.
One area of support offered at Ysgol Greenhill is the newly formed LRC (Learning Resource Centre) which has recently been named by the pupils ‘Tonnau’ (Waves in Welsh).
The Learning Resource Centre is a local Authority run specialist provision which supports pupils with significant and complex learning needs. Pupils are granted a place withing the LRC through the Local Authority Inclusion panel.
Pupils within the LRC are supported not only academically but also socially and emotionally. We have designed an alternative curriculum which provides our pupils with a wide range of positive experiences and opportunities to develop key life skills such as cooking, swimming and gardening.
Greenhill LRC provides a safe place for pupils who have found mainstream education challenging and overwhelming. However, we link closely with the mainstream of the school and all our pupils have many different opportunities to access what the mainstream has to offer, such as: accessing mainstream lessons, joining house assemblies, spending time with TAMARR pupils, being a representative on the school Senedd and the many extra-curricular clubs Greenhill has to offer.
Our local area is a fantastic resource and we like to make sure we embrace how lucky we are to live in such an amazing area.
The Tonnau department is currently split into three classes:
Working tirelessly within the LRC is a highly skilled and dedicated staff team who work together to ensure all children experience an exciting curriculum, tailored to meet their individual needs. As a result, there is a safe, caring and supportive ethos within the LRC and across the school that enables the children to be happy at school and achieve well in their learning.
We recognise the value and importance in offering a range of pastoral interventions for pupils who require extra support to maintain their physical, social, emotional and mental health and well-being and this is supported based on individualised need?.
KS4
Our KS4 pupils are offered a range of alternative accreditation courses, many of which are equivalent to GCSE standard. Our courses are carefully chosen to minimise anxiety and maximise results. With this in mind, our accreditations will be mainly coursework based. An example of this is the Level 1 and 2 Sweet program.
In Addition to this, Greenhill is looking to become a centre for delivering vocational courses run through Agored Cymru which will be a fantastic opportunity for our pupils.
Mainstream
Pupils within the Tonnau department can have the opportunity to access many of the mainstream resources Greenhill has to offer. This includes attending some mainstream lessons, lessons taught to LRC pupils by specialist teachers, attending extra-curricular clubs and house assemblies. On entering the LRC all pupils become part of Miller house and are very much included in house team events such as sports day.
Greenhill LRC is a safe place for pupils with complex learning needs, where they can be themselves, build a positive relationship with school and reach their full potential.
